Initially, my aquarium with Periophthalmus had black water, and all had long, covered with algae (seaweed similar to black beard). Everything looked like a swamp, which, however, did not disturb the fish. Then, gradually grew to the mangroves, the water began to be clean and algae decreased. Later, after the addition of other mangroves, the water has become very clean and the algae disappeared, remained just the sort of green moss covering the pieces of wood above the water level.
I finally stopped changing the water in the aquarium, only to add a little 'to replace the evaporated water. Nitrates and phosphates are almost zero.
